Turbidite, Asia’s Newest Edge Data Center Platform, Has Launched to Support Region’s Growing Tech Infrastructure Demands
HONG KONG, 3 March 2021 – Formation of Turbidite, Asia’s newest pan-Asian edge data center platform, has been completed. The new Turbidite platform will focus on developing a wide network of international-standard edge data centers across multiple Asia Pacific countries. Founded by Bill Barney, former CEO of Global Cloud Xchange, Reliance Communications and earlier Pacnet, Turbidite is backed by New World Development Company Limited (stock code 17:HK), a leading Hong Kong and China property company with market capitalization of over 96B HKD. The company will progressively roll out key locations in 2021.
“With the emerging markets of Asia Pacific set for solid growth in the next wave of digital transformation, and a huge gap in highly connected, safe data centers, we believe this is a perfect time to build our footprint in the capital cities of the key emerging Asian markets, then expanding to the second tier developed markets,” said Barney. “We are in the process of securing our first three acquisitions which are expected to be announced in 2021.”
The new company is headquartered in Hong Kong and in the process of acquiring and developing a series of carrier neutral edge data centers, with comprehensive value-added services, to support multinational corporations, large Internet companies and other hyperscalers who wish to establish or enhance footprints in the Asia Pacific region.
The Board of Turbidite will be headed by Chairman Adrian Cheng, CEO of New World Development. Barney and co-founder Wilfred Kwan will serve as Directors and the first CEO and COO of Turbidite. Don So, Head of Business Incubation for New World Development will serve as Turbidite’s CFO.
Barney and Kwan are both 25+ year veterans of the telecommunications and data center sectors. Over the years, Barney has been widely recognized for his industry leadership including DataCloud Asia’s Thought Leadership awards in 2018 and Data Center Achievement Award in 2017. Earlier he was voted Best APAC Telecom Executive by CommsDay readers in 2009 and named 2008 CEO of the Year by TelecomAsia. Kwan’s extensive track record include network and data center design and operations. He was former COO of Global Cloud Xchange and earlier served 10 years as Chief Technology Officer of Pacnet. So has over 19 years of experience in finance, management consulting, and telecom. He was the former APAC Head of Corporate Strategy and Development at Morgan Stanley.
